Some of his dummy runs were successful and some were not. or para-suit as we will call it For several years Reichelt worked on his creation which underwent several changes in design, material and weight. Obviously an already opened, fixed canopy did not allow for use in an aircraft and Reichelt became nothing short of obsessed with the pursuit of the perfect parachute. Reichelt wanted his invention to be compact allowing it to be worn by pilots whom upon experiencing trouble might abandon their air crafts before deploying the chute. There were indeed several parachute successes at the time, but they featured a fixed canopy that was already opened before decent began. The idea of a compact parachute suit (or para-suit) was a novel one. The urge to create such a thing was born out of the frequent accidents and fatalities that came with the early days of aviation- both in leisure and military capacities. He opened a successful dressmaking business and soon became fixated on the creation of a parachute which could be worn as a lightweight and compact suit before deployment. Born in 1878 modern day Czech Republic Reichelt moved to Paris at the age of twenty where he obtained French nationality and adopted the name François and never married. ![]()
